Paul Jones is a Director of Paul Jones and Associates Pty Ltd. His areas of professional interest include: middle and senior management leadership development; performance management and career counselling. He is also skilled at team building and conference facilitation.
Since establishing his consultancy business in 1990, Paul has worked for a wide range of public sector organisations in Australia at the Federal, State and Territory level. He has also worked extensively overseas for The World Bank, the University of the South Pacific and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) on major senior management development and public sector reform programs. A great deal of Paul's current work is in delivering residential and non-residential leadership development programs as a senior consultant on behalf of the Centre for Public Management (CPM).
In delivering programs or facilitating workshops, Paul has a relaxed and inclusive style which he uses to create a positive learning atmosphere. This quickly engages participants in focusing on the issues rather than on other external issues or concerns. His approach is very practical and he constantly builds links back to the reality of the participants' workplaces by drawing real examples from them and using case studies from his own extensive public sector experience.
Prior to establishing his consulting business, he had many years experience in the public sector, the last ten at the Senior Executive Service (SES) level. He has worked in both federal and state settings, in a central agency and line departments, and as a state regional manager.
Before resigning from the APS, senior positions held by him included: Head of the Corporate Services Division of the NT Department of Health, where he was involved in reforming management systems particularly the Department's very large stores and logistics system. He then moved to become Deputy of the NT Department of Primary Production where his focus was on updating and modernizing management and leadership systems in the Department. Paul then returned to the Commonwealth to become State Manager of the Federal Department of Primary Industry in NSW, where again his focus was on introducing modern management systems and processes into an organisation which operated in a very industrial environment, where the key clients were private sector and state government bodies. Paul's final years in the APS were with the Public Service Commission as an Assistant Commissioner responsible for Staff Development and then as SES Adviser, heading the SES Unit.
Paul has undergone extensive executive level development training and has a BA in Public Administration. He is accredited to use a wide variety of training tools and instruments including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the 'DiSC' Personal Profile System and the various 'Team Management' Indexes (Team Management Profile etc.). He also uses a range of LPP360's 360-degree feedback tools, including SLP, TLP and ELP, and is expert in the analysis of feedback and in providing guidance on how to follow up effectively with managers, staff and peers. His focus is on the practical application of all these tools in the workplace to improve performance.
