Peter Long

Peter Long has 34 years public sector experience in NSW and the APS, including 15 years as a Police officer with the NSW Police, as a Detective conducting criminal investigations.

Peter moved from the NSW Police to the Australian Public Service where he conducted investigations into staff misconduct and criminal conduct with the Department of Administrative Services and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Peter has extensive experience in conducting investigations of criminal conduct and misconduct in the public sector, prosecuting offenders and initiating disciplinary action.

Peter's original position in NSW as a Detective involved working in some of Sydney's busier suburbs, in country NSW and with the Homicide Squad. Peter has successfully prosecuted persons for many serious criminal matters covering a wide spectrum of offences including murder. Peter has led the investigation of many high profile and brutal murders in NSW.

Peter's experience in conducting murder investigations has given him an eye for detail and thoroughness. He has the skill to identify issues that on first glance might not be apparent. Peter understands the rights of individuals and conducts investigations in a professional manner to achieve a just outcome.

Much of Peter's 19 year APS career was spent in departmental internal investigations sections where he conducted investigations of alleged misconduct. Peter has conducted investigations of misconduct by staff employed in Australia's overseas missions and has been posted to two overseas posts in a senior management role. Peter has been involved in writing departmental codes of conduct and fraud control plans. He has designed and presented training to staff on code of conduct matters.

Peter has worked as Director and in management positions in the APS for 12 years and is very familiar with public service procedures with an emphasis on ethical conduct. Peter also has experience in APS security as Director of Protective Security for three years.

Peter has an Associate Diploma in Justice Administration; a Certificate III in Investigative Services and a Certificate IV in Government (Investigation). Peter has been awarded the National Medal and the NSW Police Medal.
